Learning Theory Matrix

My life is an adventure and here goes another adventure…writing a blog. This is my first experience writing a blog, but not my first experience writing. Writing has been a fundamental part of who I am ever since my sister gave me my first journal when I was only ten years old. It wasn’t a diary because I filled it with poetry. Well, as poetic as a ten-year old could be. I continue to write to this day, just for myself. As an introvert, I think writing is my way to process information and the world around me. So, cheers to this new adventure!

My first blog assignment is discussing how I completed a matrix about learning theories. Another short backstory…I was accepted in graduate school in 2018 and took a couple of education classes, but life got in the way, and I am just now picking up where I left off. With that being said, I needed quite a refresher to remember the four learning theories we needed to include in the matrix. First, I read the information that Dr. Gaston provided. I still needed more refreshing. Since you can learn just about anything on YouTube, I turned there. I watched a video that was helpful in breaking down the information for me. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2bsyT2S82I I also found a useful resource by BCCampus Open Education and used that primarily to complete the matrix. My reference is located at the bottom of this page. I use Microsoft Word regularly but had not created a matrix before. I found it tedious. I could not fit all of the information I wanted in the space I was given. So, I keep condensing until each section was only a few words. I wasn’t satisfied with that, but I had other school work to complete, so I had to be go with what I had created. I would have liked to create an Excel spreadsheet for the matrix. I am not Excel proficient and knew I would have to spend too much time trying to figure how to create the matrix.

I believe this information is useful and will influence my professional practice. Because I had to rework the information repeatedly to fit it into the required space, I feel like I learned it well! In researching these learning theories, I feel that I would agree the most with constructivism. I do believe that we learn best in community and our knowledge is very much influenced by our life experiences. I think learning is much more complex than the behaviorism view. I am not sure how I feel about connectivism. It seems as though we are transferring knowledge from our brains to computers. I’m not sure we, as the human race, should give that much power to artificial intelligence. I rely heavily on technology, but I already have quite a bit of life experience that is not technology driven or related. This generation of students sees everything through the lens of technology and I don’t think that is the best or only way to learn.
